BACKGROUND
The Alberta Aboriginal Youth Achievement Awards (AAYAA) is an annual event that recognizes and rewards accomplished MÈtis, First Nations and Inuit youth from around Alberta. The awards night gala attracts over 1,000 attendees including prominent members of government, community, business, and the media. It encourages positive career and lifestyle choices among young Albertans and, ultimately, contributes to the success of our economy.
FACT: Edmonton is home to the second largest population of urban Aboriginals in Canada.
FACT: Aboriginal youth are now the fastest growing urban demographic in the country.
FACT: Aboriginal youth will play a significant role in our future workforce.
Originally developed in 2003, the AAYAA are an initiative of the MÈtis Nation of Alberta (MNA). From the outset the concept attracted considerable support, calling on family, friends, teachers and co-workers to nominate outstanding youth in eight categories. The recognition afforded each recipient helps create positive role models who encourage their youthful peers to realize their own tremendous potential. The MÈtis Nation of Alberta promotes cultural advancement through the pursuit of self-reliance. Working with federal and provincial governments, it delivers strategic programming in education, training, employment assistance, housing, health and social services for MÈtis families from around Alberta.
